Honour Singapore Seeking the Well-Being of the Nation
Chairman’s Letter: October 2019
Dear Friends of Honour (Singapore)

Thank you for your gracious support and standing with us over the last five years as we continue to persevere in our mission to promote a culture of Honour and Honouring for the well-being of Singapore. The last quarter has been fruitful and rewarding as we organised the inaugural CEO Roundtable 2019, convened the 7th CEO Forum and put together the 8th Honour Film Screening. This quarterly newsletter serves to provide you with an update on our key initiatives and upcoming events, the most important of which will be our next Honour International Symposium to be held in July 2020.
Key Initiatives
CEO ROUNDTABLE 2019: We successfully organised the inaugural CEO Roundtable ‘Honour is Good Business’ on 24th July 2019. It was attended by some 70 C-Level leaders. The objective of the Roundtable is to discuss topics which are of particular importance to leaders as they seek to secure sustainable success. We had the privilege to have as our guest speakers, Mr Lim Ming Yan (Former President & Group CEO, CapitaLand Limited), Mr Jonathan Asherson (Former Non-executive Chairman, Rolls Royce Singapore), and Mr Peter Ho (CEO, HOPE Technik), with Mr Lim Soon Hock (Advisor to Honour (Singapore) and former Vice President and Managing Director of Compaq Computer Asia Pacific) as moderator. The speakers shared how honour and integrity were critical factors in the success of their respective businesses. They shared how it had been possible for them to get business without resorting to corruption and bribery, and at the same time emphasised that being reliable, dependable and trustworthy in delivering quality and excellence, and meeting deadlines, were absolutely critical success factors. We hope to hold more of such Leaders’ Forums in future. If this is of interest to you, do let me know the kinds of topics you would like to see discussed.
CEO FORUMS: The CEO Forum is a periodic forum that we organise to bring together leaders of organisations, big and small, to discuss how Honour would be critical for the sustained success of their organisations and how Honour (Singapore) could work alongside them. If you are a CEO or Senior Leader and would like to attend one of these forums, please get in touch with me at LimSiongGuan@honour.sg to express your interest. We will be retitling the name of the Forum to ‘Leaders Forum’ in future, to extend the scope of our invitation to all in various leadership positions who could find the Forum useful.

HONOUR FILM INITIATIVE: This initiative continues to grow with new institutes of higher learning coming on board to produce short films on the theme of Honour in its various expressions in life and work. Besides Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic, we recently welcomed LaSalle College of the Arts and Republic Polytechnic to join in this initiative. All in, our films have attracted over ten million cumulative online views, with numerous positive and encouraging comments. With the kind support of the Tote Board and in partnership with our founding initiative partner, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, we continue to support young filmmakers in telling stories of Honour through short films and documentaries on the theme of Honour and Honouring and this help bring about a gracious society where people look out and care for one another.
On 12th July 2019, we successfully organised the 8th Honour Film Screening where we unveiled a brand new slate of films that was played to a full house of over 700 guests at the Capitol Theatre. Mr Sam Tan, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, was our Guest of Honour. We will be unveiling yet another new slate of films and documentaries at the next Honour Film Screening on 1st November 2019 at Capitol Theatre. If you or your company would be keen to support this event by means of sponsorship or donations, please get in touch with us at admin@honour.sg. We also welcome sponsors for specific films which may particularly appeal to you or your company.

HONOUR LEARNING JOURNEY: Since the introduction of our Honour Learning Journey Programme in 2016, we have connected with some 25 secondary schools and reached out to over 5,000 students and 100 educators. We recently conducted a Learning Journey for Junior College students for the first time. Through the highly participative facilitated sessions, the students were able to better understand the importance of Honour for success in work and life, and gained practical insights on ways of living it out in their own lives. If you are an educator and you would like to explore the use of our films in values education, please get in touch with us at admin@honour.sg.
HONOUR IN ACTION: Honour (Singapore) is working on a pilot programme we tentatively call HONOUR IN ACTION, where the practice of Honour, in its multiplicity of expressions, may become a natural part of the way we live and the way we are. If being a Gracious Society becomes a dominant characteristic of Singapore, we would be mining the “HIDDEN WEALTH OF SINGAPORE” where the quality of relationships among the people will enhance both economic growth as well as establish a social environment conducive to every child and every Singaporean developing their talents and abilities the best way possible. This idea is well described by David Halpern in his book “The Hidden Wealth of Nations” (Polity Press). Such a work of social transformation may take a generation, which is why we need people with the vision, resilience, patience and conviction to come on the journey. If you are a school leader and would like to participate in the pilot programme, please write me at LimSiongGuan@honour.sg to express your interest.
HONOUR CHAMPIONS COMMUNITY:
On 5th September 2019, the Honour Champions Community team organised a highly energising and engaging session on the topic ‘The ROI of Honour’. Our esteemed panelists, Mr Aseem K Thaku (Co-founder, Give.Asia), Mr Daniel Teh (Founder, Pope Jai Restaurant), Ms Elim Chew (Founder, 77th Street), and Ms Vivian Lim (Co-founder, Women in Asia) shared their insights and convictions on how honour, trust and integrity had been critical factors in the way they ran their businesses and organisations.
We welcome all who are prepared and convicted to lead as Honour Champions in their respective organisations and other spheres of influence. Please contact us so we can meet to discuss how you joining a Chapter of the Honour Champions Community can be useful and encouraging. Our belief is that the culture of Honour promoted through Honour Champions and Honour Ambassadors will not just be critical for Singapore’s continuing survival and success as a nation, but also is critical for the survival and success of our businesses and families, and our effectiveness as leaders and workers for the future.

Should you like to learn more about the Honour Champions Community, please join in the online discussion at

TALKS: I continue to speak about Honour, on an invitation-only basis, at schools, companies, and community groups. If you believe such a session could be a boost to the vision and morale of the people in your sphere of influence, do let me know at LimSiongGuan@honour.sg.

HONOUR INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: The Honour International Symposium is a biennial symposium that brings together leaders and future leaders in business, government, and community groups to discuss issues of honour and honouring for successful business, stable homes, and strong nations. Our inaugural symposium was successfully organised in 2016 where we had the privilege of hearing Alibaba’s founder, Mr Jack Ma, share his thoughts on the virtue and criticality of Honour in his company. You can find the video message from him at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1s8I2xREZs or visit http://www.honourinternational.sg/ to learn more about the last symposium held in 2018.

The next Honour International Symposium (HIS 2020) will be held on 23-24 July 2020. We are currently working through the programme details and will provide updates as we go along. Speakers at the Honour International Symposium come from a variety of backgrounds and countries. They will share their thoughts and experiences on the effective practice of Honour in business, leadership, family, and life. Do look out for follow-on announcements, but block off your diaries now! In the meantime, should you have particular topics you would like to see covered in HIS2020, do drop me a note at LimSiongGuan@honour.sg.
Thank You!
On a concluding note, I was pleasantly surprised and encouraged to have recently learnt that several students from the Singapore University of Technology and Design had got together to create an Honour Code for their university, which essentially communicates the idea of Honouring your word (being dependable and trustworthy) and Honouring one another (looking out and caring for one another, bringing about a gracious society); besides technical skills and academic knowledge, young people need such qualities to succeed in life and in work after they leave school.

We would like to thank you again for your unwavering support as we build a culture of Honour and Honouring in Singapore for the well-being of the nation. I would be very happy to hear from you what more and what better we should do. Should you wish to support our efforts financially, donations of any size will always be welcome and deeply appreciated. As Honour (Singapore) is a charity with the status of an Institution of Public Character (IPC), all donations from individuals as well as corporate organisations will enjoy enhanced tax deduction. Also, from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020, all donations made to registered IPCs are eligible for a dollar-to-dollar matching provided by the Bicentennial Community Fund, so do consider multiplying the value of your donation to us in this Singapore’s Bicentennial Year.

I look forward to hearing your ideas and feedback. Please get in touch with me at LimSiongGuan@honour.sg.

Wishing you all the very best.
