Honour Singapore
Seeking the Well-Being of the Nation
Chairman’s Letter: April 2022
Dear Friends and Partners of Honour (Singapore),

Thank you for standing with us as we continue to promote a culture of Honour and Honouring for the well-being of Singapore. With your support and encouragement, we press on and keep doing what we can. With the opening up of Singapore to large gatherings, we now plan to hold our next Honour International Symposium on 16 September 2022, more details below.

We continue to show our appreciation and honour all our frontline heroes for their tireless efforts in keeping everyone safe and well. Thank you for being exemplars of what looking out for each other really looks like. We persevere in our outreach programmes and with the Honour Film Initiative - to capture human-centred stories of hope, resilience and the Singaporean can-do spirit. You may watch these emotive and encouraging films here at https://www.facebook.com/HonourOurSingapore/ and feel free to share these uplifting stories around.

I write to share some important updates in this quarterly newsletter but let me start with a sad event and a tribute.
Remembering Mr Richard Magnus, A Life Well Lived
Richard Magnus was one of the founders of Honour (Singapore). He passed away suddenly on 14 March 2022. We grieve his loss with his family and friends and associates at work.

Richard was so gracious and caring. He inspired us with many great ideas and questions. Always thinking about the future of Singapore and succeeding generations, he firmly believed in Honour for the long-term success of nations, organisations, families, communities, and for Singapore.

As I look back at Richard’s life, what can I say but that it was a life well lived. The subject of eulogy virtues came to mind. As David Brooks, commentator for the New York Times, wrote in his book ‘The Road to Character’ (Random House 2015):

“… I’ve been thinking about the difference between … résumé virtues and … eulogy virtues. The résumé virtues are the ones you list on your résumé, the skills that you bring to the job market and that contribute to external success. The eulogy virtues are deeper.

“They’re the virtues that get talked about at your funeral, the ones that exist at the core of your being – whether you are kind, brave, honest or faithful; what kind of relationships you formed.

“Most of us would say that the eulogy virtues are more important than the résumé virtues, but I confess that for long stretches of my life I’ve spent more time thinking about the latter than the former … Most of us have clearer strategies about how to achieve career success than we do about how to develop a profound character.”

Richard Magnus was a loving husband, a selfless father and grandfather, a bold leader, and an honourable son of Singapore. He certainly lived a life driven by eulogy virtues. This is evident in the many touching and heartfelt tributes following his passing: https://mothership.sg/2022/03/richard-magnus-tribute/. Honour (Singapore) is so glad to have had the privilege of his wisdom and guidance.
KEY UPDATES
Honour International Symposium 2022
The Honour International Symposium brings together leaders and future leaders in business, government, and community groups to discuss issues of honour and honouring for successful business, stable homes, and strong nations. The first Symposium was held in 2016 with the intention of holding it every 2 years. We held the next Symposium in 2018 but, due to COVID-19, had to cancel the Symposium for 2020.

We can now move on the 2022 Symposium. It will be held on 16 September 2022.

The theme for Honour International Symposium 2022 (HIS22) is “Forging Success with I3 - Integration, Innovation, Involvement.”

We speak of “Forging Success” because the Honour paradigm is about assuring long-term success in nation, organisation/business, community, family and self. And we have chosen the three aspects of Integration, Innovation and Involvement (hence I3) as we see these as critical elements for success in today’s national, technological and social environments.

HIS22 will be a one-day conference. There will be three discussion segments involving esteemed panel speakers centred on the topics of Integration by way of integrating interests, efforts and resources; Innovation in thinking differently from the past and creating new opportunities for the future; and Involvement as a call for people to act and to contribute as opposed to just talking and commenting and criticising.

Through I3, we hope to help people Think Right, Do Right, Be Right as they think about Integration, Innovation and Involvement.

We are currently working through the programme details and finalising the speakers. We will provide updates as we go along. Do look out for follow-on announcements, but block off your diaries now! HIS22 will run from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. You can be assured that HIS22 will be exciting and practical for work and life!
